About us

Did you know that young workers (ages 15-24) represent 13% of the U.S. labor force, but are overrepresented in dangerous jobs such as construction, agriculture, mining, and transportation?

Did you know that in 2012 there were 361 fatalities among young workers ages 15-24?

Did you know that young workers are twice as likely as workers older than 24 to end up in the emergency room as a result of work related injuries?

The Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at Georgia Tech is dedicated to providing young workers throughout the Southeast with training and educational resources intended to promote healthy work practices and prevent occupational injuries and illnesses. The Center provides training, educational resources, technical expertise, and an online resource center for young workers and their parents, career and technical teachers and employers.

Created in October 2010, the goals of the Center include:

     1. Coordinating and promoting health and safety training programs throughout the Southeast.

     2. Developing a culture of workplace safety among young workers.

     3. Building a distinct young worker safety online training program through Georgia Tech.

     4. Coordinating training programs with technical educational curricula in the Southeastern states.

     5. Adapting existing young worker safety training programs to meet the needs of trade-specific technical education programs.

Funding for the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at Georgia Tech was provided under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Susan Harwood Capacity Building Training Grants from 2010 through 2014.
